The neoclassical Basílica da Estrela was built between 1779 and 1790 to fulfil the promise of Queen Maria I after she gave birth to a son and a heir. It is located on a top of the hill in the western part of the Lisbon and its white dome is the most eye-catching and characteristic Lisbon's landmark.
The basilica's main facade is flanked by two twin bell towers and decorated with an array of statues which presents saints and allegorical figures. The four of them represents an Adoration, Faith, Liberty and Gratitude. Inside, on the right transept is placed an Empire-style tomb of Queen Mary I, but the major attraction is a famous Nativity crib designed by sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro, which includes more than 500 figures. From the dome extends a fantastic view over the city.
