Economy and Business Lisbon, together with surrounding suburbs, is the wealthiest region in Portugal. The GDP per capita (Gross Domestic Product) is much above the European's average and makes up about 45% of the Portuguese GDP.
The Lisbon's economy bases mainly on the sector of services, however in the industry sector the main branches are the steel, textile, chemical and ceramic industry. Also the seaports are very important for the Lisbon's economy - the shipbuilding industry and fishing have a very strong influence on the economy in this region. Moreover, Lisbon is the most developing region in Portugal in the sector of medias - here are located the head offices of the television and radio networks, as well as the newspaper's publishing houses.
