The Bica Funicular (Elevador da Bica), together with other three city's funiculars, present the most unusual form of transportation. Moreover, they provide perfect and comfortable connection to the, located on the larger altitudes, parts of Lisbon, which are accessible only by very steep roads. Its route goes along the Rua da Bica, starting on Rua de Sao Paulo, and ending about 245 metres higher - in Largo de Calhariz.

The Bica Funicular was opened to the public for the first time in June 1892 and originally was powered with water. Few years later, in 1896, it was replaced by a steam-powered system, and since 1914 it is followed by electricity. In 2002 it was declared to by National Monument.
