The Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa), known also as Carmo Lift (Elevador do Carmo) is one of the most unusual tourist attractions in Lisbon. In the city are few others means of transport: the Elevador da Glória, Elevador do Lavra and Elevador da Bica, that also provide very comfortable connection between downtown and places located on the larger altitudes, but they are more like funiculars, while that one is the only vertical one. From the top of this lift extends a marvelous view over the entire city.

The Santa Justa Lift is 45 metres high iron construction, decorated in a neogohic style, with two wooden elevators inside. Each elevator can accommodate 24 people. It was designed by an engineer Raul Mesnier de Ponsard from Oporto - an apprentice to the Gustave Eiffel, who projected the famous Eiffel Tower. Works began in 1900 and were finally finished two years later. The lift was opened to the public in July 1902. At first it was steam-powered, but since 1907 it is powered by electricity.
