Government and Politics in Lisbon Portugal is the democratic republic ruled by the constitution of 1976. The leading political parties, dominated in the Parliament, are the Partido Socialista (the Socialist Party) and the Partido Social Democrata (the Social Democratic Party). The main minority party in the Portuguese Parliament is Coligação Democrática Unitária made up of the Partido Comunista Português and Partido Ecologista "Os Verdes". The other parties, that are also the part of Parliament, are: Bloco de Esquerda (Left Block) and Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular (People's Party).
The President are elected for a 5-year term and maximum for two terms. The official residence of the Portuguese President is the Belém Palace. President has very wide range of entitles, but most of them are used rather rarely. At present the President's role is reduced to the supervise and representative functions.
The government in Portugal fulfil the political, legislative and administrative functions. Among others, it has rights to negotiations with other countries or international organizations, as well as to issue the decrees and to take an administrative decisions. Moreover, the government is responsible for presenting the budget in the Parliament of the Republic.
