Today's church of Madre de Deus (Igreja da Madre de Deus) is a part of the former convent of the same name, erected in this place in 1509 by Queen Leonor of Viseu, the wife of King Joao II, and dissolved in 1834. The building exterior presents the Mannerist XVIth century style, while the interior has rather a Baroque influence. The church houses a large collection of Portuguese art and religious remains, such as artistic paintings, series of decorative tiles and ritual objects related to the convent life.
The part of the building was converted into the
Museu Nacional do Azulejo, which can be also visited.
