The church of Santo António (Igreja de Santo António) is located next to the
Sé Cathedral and it's the most visited church in the Lisbon, by the city's inhabitants, as well as by tourists. The original building, which is considered to be a birthplace of Saint Anthony of Padua, was destroyed during the earthquake in 1755. The current construction was erected on a side of the former church. The works on this neoclassical building begun in 1767 and were finally finished in 1812.
The interior of the church contains some valuable sculptures and precious paintings by Pedro Alexandrino. Over the high altar is placed a monumental statue of Saint Anthony made in carved wood, that survived from the ruins of old church. Inside there is also a modern tile panel, which commemorates the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982.
