The Museu Arqueológico do Carmo is located in the Carmo Ruins, the former Gothic church founded in 1389 by Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira. This, once the largest one in Lisbon, church was terribly damaged during the earthquake in 1755. Fortunately some parts remained to today, i.ex. the basic structure from the 14th - 15th century, the great west and south doors with theirs floral and anthropomorphic carvings.
The Museum exhibition has an important archeological and historical value, the displayed objects are dated from the pre-historic times to today. This impressive collection includes, among others: ancient tombstones, royal tombs including the largest one of King Ferdinand I, South American mummies, Visigoth pillar, statuary, mosaics, ceramics, 13th century coins, and many more.
