The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum was created as a homage to the memory of Armenian philantropist Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian. It was open to the public in 1969 and houses an exceptional collection of art.

The whole Gulbenkian collection contains about 6000 pieces of art, from which over 1000 most representative works are the part of Museum's permanent exhibition. The exposition is organized in chronological and geographical order and divided into main two sections.

The first contains an Oriental and Classical Art, with an outstanding collection of Greek coins. The sections are as follow:

Egyptian Art
Greco-Roman Art
Mezopotamian Art
Eastern Islamic Art
Armenian Art
Far Eastern Art

The second is related to European Art and has following sections:

Sculpture
Art of the Book
Painting
Decorative Arts
Rene Lalique

Apart from exhibitions The Gulbenkian Museum organises also concerts and recitals in the atrium of the Library.
