The City Museum (Museu da Cidade) is located in the 18th century Pimenta Palace, built by a King Joao V as a gift to his mistress Madre Paula. The Museum was opened in 1962.
The large exposition of Museum shows the history of Lisbon since prehistoric times, through Roman, Visigoth, Moorish and Middle Ages periods, until nowadays. The collection includes paintings, drawings, lapidary, archeology items, engravings, historic documents, etc.
The most impressive specimens in this remarkable collection are:
an enormous model of Lisbon before earthquake in 1755, maps and prints from before and after the quake, the tile panels of city scenes, engravings of the Inquisition, engravings of Catherine of Bragança departing Lisbon to marry England's Charles II.
