The Museum of Puppets (Museu da Marioneta) was founded in 1987 by Companhia de Marionetas de Sao Lourenço, and it is located in the former 18th century Convento das Bernardas. The Museum houses the marvelous collection of various types of puppets, some of them even from the 17th and 18th centuries. It contains in total over the 1000 exhibits from different parts of the world and various cultures, i.ex. from Africa, Belgium, China, France, Italy, New Zealand, Indonesia, and certainly, from Portugal. Apart from puppets on a display are also posters, photos and clothing and stage props.
The permanent exhibition is divided into six sections, which together giving a good picture of the development and diversity of puppets in the world. The sections are:
