The Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha) is located in the Belém district, in the western wing of the
Jerónimos Monastery. It is one of the most important museums in Europe, and also one of the most visited in Lisbon. Its collection is related to the maritime history of Portugal and the main base for its creation and today's greatness was the remarkable collection gathered by King Luís I. The Museum was finally opened in 1963.
The exhibition contains the models of royal galleys, traditional river, sea, fishing and leisure boats and merchant marine ships. Moreover, its also includes the nautical instruments, historical paintings, archeological items, sculptures and many scale models of ships that were used in Portugal since 15th century.
The most representative examples are among others:
a wooden figure of Archangel Raphael from the Vasco da Gama's voyage to India,
two ceremonial barges from 18th century, one of them built for Queen Maria I
a royal cabin from the yacht of Queen Amelia from the 19th century,
the famous seaplane "Santa Cruz" that in 1922 made the first crossing of the south Atlantic,
replicas of 16th century maps,
the world's largest collection of astrolabes.
