The Chiado Museum is located in the historical centre of Lisbon, in the Chiado neighbourhood. It was founded in 1911, and completely redesigned in 1994 by French architect Jean-Michel Willmotte. The Museum houses the most important collection of contemporary art in Portugal. It contains mainly the Portuguese paintings, drawings and sculptures dating from the 19th century (1850) to the mid 20th century.
The permanent exhibition is displayed in the thematic order. Paintings and sculptures presents the development of art from the Romanticism to Modernism.
The collection includes the artworks of well-known artists such as: António Silva Porto, Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, António Carneiro, Miguel Ângelo Lupi, Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, Abel Manta, Dordio Gomes, Nadir Afonso José de Almada Negreiros, António Soares dos Reis, and many others.
