The Orient Museum (Museu do Oriente) is located in the former warehouse, in the Edifício Pedro Álvares Cabral. This magnificent museum dedicated to the Portugal's relations with Asia was opened on May 2008. It houses amazing collection of eastern art, which includes the examples from China, India, Japan, Timor and, certainly, from Portugal. On the display are, among others: ritual objects, ceramics, textiles, furniture, paintings and masks with the oriental origins.
The Museum's collection is divided into two major permanent exhibitions, which are:
The Portuguese Presence in Asia - which contains over a thousand artistic and documental exhibits of the exceptional value, i. ex. the Japanese and Chinese folding screens from 17th and 18th centuries, a marvelous collection of porcelain connected with a coat of arms of Companhia das Índias, a various examples of Namban art and the great collection related to the Timor's culture.
The Kwok On Collection - a large, over 10 000-pieces collection related to Asian's mythological and religious traditions, as well as to its especial work of arts. It was created in 1999 thanks to Jacques Pimpaneau, who donated to the museum great part of this collection, which currently is considered as one of the best in Europe.
Apart from the permanent exhibitions the Museum organizes also temporary displays, workshops and other activities, which are focused on the people's education in that interesting field of knowledge.
