The Museu do Teatro Romano is placed behind the cathedral in the direction to Miradouro da Santa Luzia. This small museum reflects the history of Roman Theater in Lisbon and presents the archeological remains of these monumental place.
The theatre was built by Emperor Augustus in the first century BC, then in 57 AD rebuilt and expanded to a capacity for 5000 people. In the 4th century it was abandoned and disappeared beneath ground. Its ruins were discovered in 1798 during the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake. In 1967 it was designated as a important building of interest.
The exhibition contains, among others:
the 18th and 19th centuries icons, Roman columns, sculptures, ceramics and inscriptions, i.ex. a sculpture of Silenus and inscription that dedicate the theatre to Nero.
