The Museu Nacional de Arqueologia was founded in 1983 by Dr. José Leite de Vasconcelos. It gathers one of the largest and most important collections of archeology in the whole Portugal, among others the first collection of the founder. In a permanent exhibitions are displayed the group of Treasures of Portuguese Archeology and of the Egyptian antiquities.
The whole collection is divided into following sections:
Egyptian Antiquities Objects of attire and adornment Weapons Architecture Symbolic artefacts Figurative bronze Ceramics Epigraphy Sculpture Lithic industry Instruments and Utensils Numismatics Jewellery Terracottas Glass
The specimens come from the different periods, which in the chronological order are:
Palaeolithic Mesolithic Neolithic Chalcolithic Bronze Age Iron Age Roman Period Visigothic Period Islamic Period Medieval Period
Apart from the exhibitions Museum offers also other services, such as seminars, conferences and speciality courses to increase people's knowledge in that field of science. Since 1895 it publishes regular publications called "O Arqueólogo Portugues".
