The Museu Nacional do Azulejo was founded in the former XVI-century convent of Madre de Deus. The exhibition presents a wide range collection of, especially Portuguese, tiles and shows its development: from XVth century archaic, painted ceramic tiles, until contemporary tile production.
The noteworthy are:
Retábulo de NS Senhora da Vida from 1580, the altar fronts of oriental influence from the 17th century, the 17th century hunting room, the History of the Hatmaker from the end of the 18th century, the 20th century surfacing of Padaria Independente, and many more.
The Museum has library which especializes in ceramics and tiles. Opening hours: 10am - 12.30pm and 2pm - 4pm
