The Museu Nacional dos Coches is located in the 18th century building of the former Royal Riding School of the Belém Royal Palace. It was founded by Queen Amélia de Orléans e Bragança, a wife of King Carlos I.
The Museum's collection contains a large diversity of coaches used for ceremonies and for travel since 17th until 19th century. Most of them used to be the property of the Royal Family.
Apart from the vehicles the Museum displays also the collections of:
cavalry harness, ceremonial and service uniforms for the coaches, professional accessories from the 18th century, i. ex. the large horn collection, oil portraits of the Bragança dynasty monarchs, graphic works, prints, drawings and photographs related to the history of the Museum.
The noteworthy are the three lavishly gilded Baroque carriages used in 1716 by the Marquis of Fontes, at the time of Pope Clement XI.
The whole exhibition shows the evolution of European transport from the animal-pulled vehicles until an appearance of automobile, and for its historical value is considered as the best in the world.
