The Museu Nacional do Traje is housed in the former Angeja-Palmela Palace, in the 18th century Monteiro-Mor park, which is a traditional recreational botanical area.
The initial collection was taken from Museu Nacional dos Coches and contained about 7000 costumes and accessories. A great part of it was a property of the Royal House.
The whole exhibition presents clothes from the 14th to 19th centuries and the female costumes are predominant. Moreover, it includes also an important selection of 18th century Court and Empire costumes and civil apparels from the 14th to 20th centuries. In the area related to textile technologies are displayed different techniques of making thread, weaving and manual printing of the cloth, as well as the cloths made of various materials, such as cotton, linen, wool and silk.
Apart from clothes the Museum contains a wide range collection of accessories. Very interesting is the section of popular costumes, toys, dolls and games from the period between 19th and 20th centuries.
