The current building of Sao Bento Palace (Palacio de Sao Bento) was originally a Benedictine monastery of Sao Bento da Saúde. It was erected in 1598 and dissolved in the early years of XIX century. Since big renovation in 1834, this enormous white Neoclassical building is, until today, the seat of the Portuguese Parliament.
The building is characterized by allegorical symbols related to the Nation and its great men. On pedestals at the grand entrance are four statues that represent Prudence, Strength, Justice, and Temperance, and in the interior there are some marble pillars, statues in a Neoclassical style and other precious works of art.
