The Ajuda Palace (Palacio Nacional da Ajuda) is located on the Ajuda hill and is one of the most elegant buildings in whole Europe.
The works on the Palace construction went very slowly: the first stone was laid in 1795, while the real works started only in 1802. By years the conception of design and style has been changing and the final result was rather far from the original project. In 1861 the building finally became an official residence of the Portuguese Monarchy, and it served this function until 1910, when the proclamation of the Republic took place. After that the Ajuda Palace was converted into the Museum and opened to the public in 1968.
The Ajuda Palace contains the fabulous collection of 15th to 20th centuries, mainly decorative, art. It includes examples of jewellery, sculptures, paintings, ceramics, textiles, lamps, etc.
Nowadays, apart from being a Museum, the Ajuda Palace is used also for official ceremonies.
