The Belém Palace (Palacio Nacional de Belém) was built in 1559. In 1726 it was bought by King Joao V, who converted it into his official summer residence. For many years this building was occupied by members of a royal family, and since 1910, until nowadays, is the official residence of Portugal's President.
The Belém Palace contains a number of separate buildings, with the main one designed for central functions of Presidency. In front of the Palace is a lovely square with a statue of Afonso de Albuquerque in its central part, and all around are plenty of well-tended gardens. The most beautiful ones are Jardim de Buxo and Jardim da Cascata.
In October 2004, in the former palace mews, was opened the Presidency Museum, which presents the history of the Portuguese Republic and its Presidents. It can be visited everyday, from Tuesday to Sunday.
