Public Transport in Lisbon


The capital of Portugal is a city of a large population density. It's also the main tourist destination and every year it receives large numbers of visitors. Moreover, it is located on seven hills, what made moving across the Lisbon a little complicated. But, the authorities of the city made sure to organize the traffic in a most convenient way and introduced all the necessary means of transportation to provide the best and comfortable connections to all the points of the town.

Local transport contains buses, trams, underground and taxis.


Bus service

In Lisbon operate a well-developed bus network, with about 90 bus routes, that provides good connection to all the places in the city. Some of them runs also on the suburbs. There is also an Aerobus, which connects the center of the city with the International Lisbon Airport.


Tram service

Trams are the traditional and historical mean of transport in Lisbon, and also the symbol of the city. For every tourist is just a must to go, even once, by a famous Line Nr 28.


Metro

Underground is the one of the quickest ways to travel across Lisbon. The metro network covers most of the city and the stations are situated near the main points of interest in the city, also near the most of hotels.


Taxi service

Taxi cabs in Lisbon are very characteristic - they are black and green colours. They are also very cheap, so it's a very good option to move across the town, or even on the suburbs.


Connection to other side of Tagus

Both sides of Tagus are connected by two bridges: the 25 de Abril Bridge - built in 1966, and the Vasco da Gama Bridge from 1998. This second one has a lenght of 17,2 km and is the longest bridge in Europe.
Another possibility to cross the river is to take a ferry. There are two companies that manage this type of transport: Transtejo, which operates from few points of the town: Cacilhas, Montijo. Seixal, Trafaria and Porto Brandao, and Soflusa, which provides connection to Barreiro.
