To get to the Christ the King Sanctuary you need to take a ferry from the the Comercio Square and Cais de Sodre to Cacilhas, and then take a bus (number 101), which goes directly to the monument.

The Christ the King Sanctuary (Santuário do Cristo Rei) is located on the south bank of Tagus River, in Almada. This colossal monument is one of the main tourist attractions in Lisbon and also the main destination for thousands of pilgrims from the whole world. It was built in 1959 to express the gratitude of Portugal for being spared the serious destructions in a World War II.

The monument presents the Christ the King with open arms - the statue which is a smaller copy of the famous Christ the Redeemer from Rio de Janeiro. The figure measures 28 metres and stands on an enormous pedestal of about 75 metres of height - the whole structure over the 100 metres high. From the top of the structure extends the magnificent view over the Lisbon and Tagus River. You can get there by a lift installed inside the monument.
