Vasco da Gama Tower (Torre Vasco da Gama) is the tallest building in Lisbon. It measures 145 metres and it's named after Vasco da Gama - the famous Portuguese explorer. It was built in 1998 for the Expo World's Fair. Its made of steel construction resembling the sail of a caravel was designed by architects Leonor Janeiro, Nick Jacob and SOM. The works were made by an engineering company Martifer.
The Vasco da Gama Tower has an observation terrace on an altitude of 120 metres. From this point extends the marvelous panorama over entire Lisbon, the Tagus River and Vasco da Gama bridge.
Currently the viewing platform is closed for the public because of building works - it is said that in the future the 21-floor luxury hotel, integrated with today's Tower, will stand there.
